- Vintage Signed Poul Cadovius 'Basketweave' Settee in Rosewood and Cotton, 1960s
Vintage Signed Poul Cadovius 'Basketweave' Settee in Rosewood and Cotton, 1960s
Up for sale we have a wonderful pair of rare 'basketweave' settees in rosewood by the celebrated Danish designer Poul Cadovius, manufactured by France and Son, circa 1960 (applied manufacturer's label affixed to underside of both examples).
These are extremely well-made and neat little pieces: solid teak frame with expertly joined rosewood panels--each settee featuring four triple-metered corner joints with remain today as strong as they are beautiful--a technical choice demonstrating a serious commitment to good aesthetics, as well as excellence in the engineering of every detail. Moving lower, these rectilinear yet sophisticated seating units feature exposed finger-joints to the sled-style bases--another physical representation of the well-established Danish-design dogmas of transparency, integrity, simplicity, and a commitment to strong, well-made furniture designed to last several generations.
The most obvious and perhaps most exciting design detail of these units is the 'basketweave' woven rosewood veneer panels, which enclose the seating area as the settees' exterior frame. These panels are as visually exciting as they are technically challenging, a truly ambitious and unique application of this rare and precious material. Of note, the effect created is not a trompe l'oeil--the pieces are physically woven (as with a traditional wicker basket or Danish cord seat) before being pressed in place--as opposed to being inlayed flush. This produces a raised texture to the panels which can be felt by the hand, as well as a truly woven look, which would not have been achieved with a traditional checkerboard marquetry inlay. Also worth mentioning is how well preserved this execution remains, no bubbling, delamination, or cracking due to dryness--a testament to the skill and consideration of the cabinetmakers who produced this design.
Tapered back cushions allow for a nice reclined comfort, petite size make these great for a big statement in a smaller space. Alternatively, because the backs of these are lovely looking too, these could be spread about in a grander room, acting as ad hoc room dividers etc...
These are being sold individually but we can sell them as a pair--reach out with any questions or requests for reservation etc.
