Vintage Bo-561 Easy Chair by Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius, Denmark, 1963
A gorgeous example of a rare and impressively-executed cantilevered easy chair in chrome-plated steel and black vinyl by Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius for Bo-Ex 1963 in original vintage condition.
Sublime machining and shaping of solid steel frame, top-quality hand-stitched cushions and supporting panels, and 100% down cushion filling make this piece a joy to behold and use. The Bo-561 appears to be a very simple design, but the details reveal themselves slowly--chamfered seat and backrest panels, chamfered steel frame, and 'floating' laminate spacers add a visual sophistication that elevates an archetypal and perfectly-unadorned form, to the level of applied art.
The construction itself is also fundamental and purely mechanical in the most intelligent way, with two threaded cantilevered side assemblies (modified trestles) supporting seat and backrest panels that span the width of the chair, themselves reinforced by a solid steel stretcher. The stretcher is installed in a precisely-machined mortise on each of the side assemblies, and is tightened from below with a threaded bolt, allowing the entire from to come apart and go back together quickly and easily. This design is confident and graceful, and a minimalistic meditation on ergonomics and material. Like all of the work these two designers produced together, it is of the highest quality in materials, execution, visual dynamism, and design intelligence.
