Pair Vintage 415 CAB Armchairs in Cognac Leather by Mario Bellini, Italy, 1987
Commodious, understated, elegant, and touchable beyond compare—these vintage 415 CAB armchairs in Cognac Leather by Mario Bellini are incredible examples of seating design. Larger and more voluminous than its predecessor the 414, the 415 line—the last of the CAB designs—represents the culmination of over 10 years of experimentation into this innovative and unprecedented furniture structure.
The construction consists of a combination of stiff leather on the outer part, and soft and thick leather of the same color on the inner part—utilizing sumptuous saddle leather for its structural qualities in an application that stretches the mind and pleases the eye. Supporting the leather exterior, is a layer of CFC-free polyurethane foam with additional polyester padding; the padded layer is in turn supported by and adhered to a strong and lightweight enameled steel frame. These pieces also feature removable seat cushions in polyurethane with feather padding.
Branded manufacturer’s mark present on the underside of the pieces. The CAB line is in the permanent collection at MoMa in New York and remains an icon of 20th century seating design. This pair came from the estate of the original owner and remains in very good vintage condition with rich patination throughout and no major losses or flaws.
