Vintage Set of Six Hans Wegner CH-30 Dining Chairs in Oak and Vinyl, 1952
A lovely and well-preserved set of CH-30 dining chairs in oak and black vinyl. This model was designed in 1952 by a young Hans Wegner, and was one of the original five designs by Wegner created for and manufactured exclusively by Carl Hansen of Denmark.
Featuring many tried and true Danish design elements—laminated bent plywood back and seat panel for relaxation and strength, solid mortise and tenon joinery, and excellent comfort-conscious ergonomics—this chair is set apart by its idiosyncrasies. One such interesting quirk is the cruciform cover cap, an aesthetic detail which functionally conceals the fasteners that mount the backrest to the uprights. Another subtle element of the design language of this piece, is the exciting interplay between rounded and flatter pieces of the frame. With no pieces turned in the round as it typical on many Wegner chairs (e.g front leg of the W2 chair), the front and back legs of this design instead featured entirely different radiuses, the exterior radius appearing cylindrical, while the interior face has a subtle curve which appears square—deliberate but nearly silent, these details reveal themselves in time to those for whom looking is a joy.
Though the frame and overall dimensions are petite, the large welcoming contoured seat and backrest support sitters of any size properly. The set is in very good vintage condition, warm consistent patina throughout, no structural issues or major losses or flaws.
