Sculptural Coffee Table in Italian Walnut with Beveled-Glass Top, Italy, 1960s
Attractive and unique custom coffee table in polished Italian walnut (juglans regia) with original beveled glass top; made in Italy, circa 1960. Carefully book-matched veneer application to the base creates a striking, gem-like abundance of dense figured grain no matter where the eye turns. The repetition and careful layout of the same pattern at different parts of base provide ample detail and visual complexity throughout, but also some repetition, rhythm, and refrain. The hand-rubbed shellac finish is crystal clear with a soft sheen, allowing you to feel as though you're peering into a living tree, fed with nutrients and bursting with organic life--as you move around the piece the base will catch the ambient light, casting warm tones and a rich natural glow. Lastly the dovetailed detail to the top of the base adds a joinery trompe l'oeil that is a joy to behold. The table is in very good vintage condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use.
