- George Nakashima "Shell-Shaped" Coffee Table in American Black Walnut, 1940s
George Nakashima "Shell-Shaped" Coffee Table in American Black Walnut, 1940s
"Shell-Shaped" coffee table in American Black Walnut designed and handmade by the venerable George Nakashima, circa 1943. This piece has been authenticated by the Nakashima Foundation for Peace and comes with signed disclaimer letter as well as the table's original publication materials included. A rare form within his catalogue, this biomorphic model was produced sometime between 1942-1945. Observing the turned, tapered, and splayed leg, the conoid style base, the through dowels which show on the top, the asymmetrical poise of this unique design, and selection and treatment of the timber; one can see that the materials, design elements, and construction details used here would be re-applied with success on many later designs throughout his long career. We would like to thank Mira and the team at the Foundation for Peace for their help in authenticating this rare and early example of George's furniture design.
