Rare Hans Wegner AT-325 Desk in Teak and Chrome-Plated Steel, Denmark, 1960s
Hans J. Wegner's partnership with Andreas Tuck produced some of his most innovative designs in desks and tables. This rare desk, designed in the 1960s, foreshadows Wegner's departure from strictly wood-based designs; demonstrating his flowering experimentation with wood+steel compositions which would become more prominent in his work of the latter part of the 20th century.
This piece is comprised of a teak top, with two teak and oak locking drawers flanking the broad work surface; as well as two chrome-plated steel leg sections with teak sabots capping rectangular steel legs--a motif perhaps borrowed from his contemporary Finn Juhl's seating work for Bovirke (see our BO-77 modular sofa by Finn Juhl).
There is a forward-looking sleekness within this design--a simplicity of structure and a bold confidence in the pared down use of materials--no decorative gestures, a structural minimalism dictates this design. We can also see a sophisticated assimilation of international design trends by Wegner, trends which had begun to favor designs less dogmatically 'natural' in their treatment and pairing of materials--designs that celebrated contrast and visual dynamism over a national or regional craft tradition.
Piece is signed with branded manufacturer's mark to underside: [Andr. Tuck Design: Hans J. Wegner Made in Denmark]. Signed with branded manufacturer's mark to underside: [Furniture Makers Danish Control]. Beautiful patina to the top, great chatoyancy and a wonderful range of tones from cognac to amber to gold depending on lighting conditions.
